SHINE

Exploring the limits of Contemporary Design

The exhibition SHINE is a project within the EMBRACING EXCHANGE program and investigates the relation between ‘Contemporary Jewellery’ and ‘Contemporary Design’.

During the years, the movement of ‘Contemporary Jewellery’ has evolved within the profession of jewellery design. Next to aspects of craft and design, works in this category explicitly involve aspects of art. They are not limited to ‘wearability’. The scale of these designs may vary from a tiny earring to a large-scale sculpture.

The question arises how ‘Contemporary Jewellery’ relates to other professions within the creative industry, like architecture, urban-, product-, media- and fashion design. SHINE shows examples of design crossing the borders of these professions.

The multi-annual program EMBRACING EXCHANGE aims to connect designers, makers and institutions across the national borders. The program focuses on design hotspots Eindhoven, Cologne and Maastricht and exhibits contemporary top-design from this crossborder region between rivers Meuse and Rhine.

By organizing exhibitions, presentations and debates, the program is building a crossborder regional network and a corresponding regional design identity. The exhibition SHINE forms the latest project within the program.

EMBRACING EXCHANGE is an initiative of Dutch Design Exchange Maastricht and Passagen Interior Design Week Köln. The project was realized with support from the Province of Limburg, Stadt Köln and the Municipality of Maastricht.
